BOXING DAY RAFT RACE 2009
Just as exciting as the first time some 40 odd years ago.
Loads of entries, but only two stood head and shoulders above the rest. I refer of course to the IKSAC entries, The Viking Long Boat and Bob the Builder. Meticulous care and attention too historic detail with the design and assembly teams [and that's only for the outfits] meant we should have won but fickle fate decided otherwise. This setback didn't stop our teams members having a fine old time stoutly defending themselves against those dastardly spectators and other water users.
On the Viking raft we had.
IAN the PILLAGER, KEITH the MIGHTY SMIGHTER, ADI BLOOD AXE, PAUL the DESTROYER,
CLAY GUTS and GORE and JOSH the TOUCAN. These last two wondering when it was their turn for the rape and pillage.
On the Bob the Builder raft. An altogether more refined outfit, we had.
WORKMAN'S BUM RAY, GAFFER STEVE,
FIXER COLLEEN, MIKE the SPARKS and
Amongst the first to arrive at the launch site was of course ours, well it was only 7.00 but with final assembly it wasn't until 9.30 that both were gently slid into the water. Unfortunately a water fight immediately broke out between various ill disciplined entrants. This being a clear infringement of rule 7196/D. Well someone had to test the newly purchased water pump. With 70 more rafts to launch the exasperated organisers decided to let these trouble makers get under way. So to the sound of sirens and Christmas music the 2009 Boxing Day Raft Race was under way. Unfortunately blocking water pumps with flour bombs and filling sound systems with water does not add to their reliability [ I hope it doesn't invalidate the guarantees] But things improved with the attention of Ian the Pillager our chief engineer. After an uneventful gentle paddle down the river and over the weir, our two rafts were lifted out and carefully placed on their respective vehicles for their journey home. Thanks must go to all those members and friends for the help they gave to this major venture. Without them it would not have been possible
